TRON. My take.

It's 5am. I'm a bit tired. Everythings a bit fuzzy. It's pouring
outside. I'm fresh from a 1am screening of TRON in IMAX 3D. I'm coming
to you from my iPhone at SFO as I wait for my flight.

Where do I start?  After watching the first one a couple months ago
I'm not sure how I felt about this new one. Sure it was two decades
ago and CG were in the stone ages. I guess it failed to capture my
imagination in today's world of hi-res. Slowly the trailers were
leaked with Daft Punks tracks and I began to salivate. Just at the
sheer eye candy and dirty tracks. Fast forward to today, even with all
the hype, I can say that the film does not disappoint.

If you're looking for a mind bending thriller then the film is not for
you. But if you like solid action. Decent story telling. Pretty good
acting. And eye candy delivered in dump trucks. Then this is THE flick
for you.

It's interesting that through out the film it kinda borrows motifs
from other scifi films. Matrix, 5th Element, Blade Runner to name a
few. Some would argue that those films could of been inspired by the
original TRON, so guess it's borrowing from itself then right?  It's
all swell then. I don't think this takes away from the film at all.
Just an interesting observation.

Before watching TRON I was a little skeptical that they could make
this film seem cool and not over the top cheesy like Speedracer. They
definitely succeeded. All the costumes were very classy and down right
bad ass. Typical to scifi doctrine, the guys wear dark flowing outfits
and women wear very sexy skin tight leather. The lights on the outfits
seem really cool and in my barely conscious state I'd rock'em to some
extent. But that could change tomorrow.

The story flows very well and definitely keeps a solid pace. Never a
dull moment. Daft Punks score really does a great job of not being
just awesome, but really integrating into the story. It's a very
powerful score. Electronic rock with drums and mixing in some strings.
Again the melodies and notes and styles seem to have been i fluenced
by othe scifi films. Dreamy techo was pretty common in Blade Runner,
its pretty common in this film. Its also widely used in
Inception...for obvious reasons. If I lived in a digital world I would
totally expect the world to sound like this. The sun would play drum
beats and ominous clouds would make dark electric guitar music. I also
would expect to see two astronaught lookin figures spinnin records on
the moon. Yes I bought the album on iTunes right after. And listening
to it right now.

One last note is my love hate with 3D video. The IMAX did a superb job
of having crystal clear clarity. I've watched some 3D films before not
in IMAX and it was just terrible. Everything was hard to focus on and
fast motion just made it worse. Definitely not the case today. Perhaps
last time the projector was calibrated by a monkey. What truely bugs
me about 3D is that they force you to look at something. A building is
in 3D right in front and naturally I should look at it. But what if I
want to see the clouds in the background? My brain has to try to focus
on the back, but since it's not in focus and never will be my brain
has to go through a bunch more checks for self sanity and diagnostics
checks to make sure my eyes aren't broke and that it's computing the
math properly. All this makes my brain hurt. Why can I just look at
things the way I want to look at it? It's like being forced to have
tunnel vision. My eyes don't operate in some communist regime.

There I said what I had to say. I'm not sure I said anything at all.
Bottom line it's a fantastic flick every scifi fan should see.
Watching the original is not absolutely necessary but will definitely
help you notice and appreciate the details.

You'll enjoy it. I promise.

End Of Line.
